SKY Academy, Venice - Team Sports

SKY Academy had a great fall start to sports for the 2017-2018 school year. Flag football and volleyball compiled great seasons with championship runs deep into the playoffs and beyond! Varsity Volleyball completed their season with a 2 set victory in the championship game versus SKY Englewood. Volleyball wins their second championship under the tutelage of Coach Natalie Gaudreau. The Varsity volleyball team finishes with an overall record of 9-1. Led by three year starter and team captain Natallie Waggoner, the team had great experienced leadership. Other stand-outs were Makayla Hunter, Emma Sexton and Carli Waggoner. All players contributed to the team’s success and they all deserve great recognition. The JV Volleyball won the JV tournament to take the Junior Varsity League title. They played with heart and desire while attaining the experience to play in future competitions as a great team. Many players from both teams will be returning next year to continue a run of success. The flag football team finished with a 7-2 record as they played deep into the play-offs. Coming up just short in the semi-final game versus eventual league champion Palmetto Charter 20-14, SKY still put together a memorable rebuilding season. Led by Brianna Weimer, Kenneth Derisier and the Derun brothers on offense; the team scored many points on offense. Defensively led by Weimer, Derisier, and Brandon Kara; the defense was stout and tough to score against. Austin Lane contributed on both sides of the ball, and younger players gained valuable experience to push for a return to the championship game next year. The fall sports teams compiled a total of 21 victories to just 3 loses. Great beginning of the year for SKY sports!! Boys and Girls’ Basketball begins in mid-October as well as Boy’s and Girls’ Cross Country.

With the fall season completed with great success, the Winter season for sports has begun with the same effort and focus. The boys and girls basketball teams have had try-outs and the roster has been completed. The teams are working hard and pushing to improve on last year's play-off push. The first game for both teams was on Tuesday, November 7th at Sarasota Military Academy with great victories. The first home game is the following day at home versus Imagine North Port. Games start at 4:00 for girls with boys immediately following.

The cross country team is in full stride with their first competition under wraps. Out of a 16 team field, the cross country team finished in 2nd place for both boys and girls. They are off to a great start with improved runners from last season. At the next meet will be on next Wednesday the 8th of November; both teams finished in the top three for teams out of 16. Doing great thus far for SKY Venice sports!
