6th Grade

Team Project-Survey

You will work in small groups beginning Monday, 4-15-19.

Although we will spend some class time completing this project, you will still need to allot time to complete the majority of the project on your own.

Your final project will be due on 5-15-19 with presentations beginning the week of 5-20-19.  You must include the following to receive the maximum number of points:

  1.  All group members’ full names listed on project
  2. Topic of Survey
  3.  Explanation of execution of survey:  How did you collect data, how did you organize data, etc. how many people did each group member survey (a minimum of 30 students per group must be surveyed), and any other information your group feels is relevant.
  4. Analysis of data:   An explanation of why your group is confident that the data collected is an accurate representation of the topic.  An explanation of what the data reveals or the conclusions that can be drawn from the data should also be included.  Please also explain what the best measure of center and variation would be and why.
  5. Graph your data using the appropriate type of graph to display your results.  You must include a minimum of one data table, one Box and Whiskers Plot, and one other graphical representation.  Graphs and all components of the project must be created in the correct format to view on Promethean Board.
  6.  A copy of survey used must also be part of the presentation.  Your survey must have between 3 to 5 questions related to your survey topic.

Mrs. Staley

Dear Parents,

I am sure most of you are thinking where did the time go, summer is over and another new school year has begun. No matter how many years I have been a teacher, I always wonder that as well. However, I am always excited as I prepare the classroom for my upcoming students. I love the feeling of a fresh start and new memories to be made.

This is the beginning of my 30th year as a teacher. I have taught multiple grade levels and subject areas; however, the past 16 years I have focused on Math.  It is my goal to help students enjoy math, consider it from a new perspective, and to feel successful.

To help your child be successful, and for you to know my expectations I have attached a copy of the course syllabus on this site.  I will send home an acknowledgement form on the first day of school.  I would appreciate it if you will kindly complete, sign, and return the parent acknowledgement form indicating you have read the syllabus. The parent acknowledgement form also provides me with your email, the best way to reach you, your child's access to technology in your home, and any other information you would like to share.

Please always feel free to reach out to me. You may leave me a voice mail by calling the school number: 941- 999-4775 and then extension 131. You may also send me an email at: [email protected]. Email is a form of communication I often choose to use so, please check your email occasionally for communication from me.  I will return any phone calls or emails within 24 hours. Your child is important to me. I feel privileged to be part of your child’s life. There truly is no price that can be placed on helping to mold and develop a child. We are a team in this process so, please let’s work together.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Staley

LEARNING OUTCOMES- Begin with the end in mind

Students will accurately communicate and successfully demonstrate a variety of mathematical ideas and concepts.  Students will develop and incorporate diverse mathematical skills in their everyday lives to solve real-world problems.

TEXTBOOK- Big Ideas Math, Course 1, by Ron Larson and Laurie Boswell, Published by Big Ideas Learning, LLC. 2015

COURSE DESCRIPTION- Sixth Grade mathematics focuses on teaching numerous math topics aligned to the Florida State Standards for Mathematics, with an emphasis on communication, collaborative learning, problem-solving skills and applicable use of technology.  Major topics include:

  • Ratios and Proportional Relationships- Analyze Proportional Relationships
  • The Number System- Perform Rational Number Operations
  • Expressions and Equations- Generate Equivalent Expressions; Solve Problems Using Linear Equations and Inequalities
  • Statistics and Probability- Analyze an Compare Populations; Find Probabilities of Events
  • Geometry- Understand Geometric Relationships; Solve Problems Involving Angles, Surface Area, and Volume

MATERIALS AND ORGANIZATION- Be Proactive

Every day in class you will need to bring the following materials:

  • Executive Function/Math binder with paper and pencils
  • Math Workbook/Journal
  • Pencil
  • Planner

GRADING, LATE WORK, ABSENCE POLICIES- Put First Things First

At Sky Academy, grades will be weighted according to the following percentages:

  • Summative Assessments- Tests or project 40%
  • Formative Assessments- Quizzes or classwork 50%
  • Homework 10%- Homework will be assigned Monday through Friday, and will be checked at the beginning of class. To receive full credit for an assignment, ALL PROBLEMS must be attempted with the process shown.  Late homework will result in a reduction of the weekly homework grade. Homework may occasionally be graded for accuracy.

Grading Scale: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, 59 and below F

Late Work- Completing your work as scheduled is vital to your success in math class. Assignments turned in one day late will receive a maximum score of 70%. Assignments turned in two days late will receive 50% credit.  Homework is graded as a completion grade; therefore, it is pass/fail.

Absences- It is the student’s responsibility to obtain their missing work when an absence occurs.  In addition, assignments are posted online. Students must also copy the missing date’s work from a classmate’s planner on the day that they return from an absence. Please note** If an absence occurs because a student leaves school early or arrives late, they are expected to retrieve their work before leaving school for the day.

DISCIPLINE PLAN- Think Win-Win

In order to create a positive learning environment and to ensure each student’s mathematical success, the following rules outline my expectations for student behavior.

Classroom Rules:

  • Follow directions the first time that they are given
  • Pay attention in class and participate- Class participation and active questioning for clarification play a vital role in your success in this class.
  • Be prepared with all materials
  • Be respectful in all of your actions and words
  • Adhere to all Sky Academy rules

***Consequences for disregarding our classroom rules will be documented, and a parent or guardian may be notified.
